The Food Goodie Bag programme started off as an attempt to channel non-perishable food items to the needy families and individuals living within the community. It began as an adhoc distribution of food items and toiletries donated by food companies who have batches of items that can no longer be sold but is still good for consumption or use. It evolved into a regular monthly handout when we found ways to ensure more regular inflow of food supply through running Food Drives at various schools and corporations as well as donations which have been used to purchase food whenever our supply runs low.
The Results
The original idea was to feed a needy family, help them put 3 meals at their table. The distribution is being done by the teachers and sometimes as a house delivery in their free time with their private cars. On some occasions, parents will collect the goodie bags from the school personally. This way, the teachers get the chance to talk to the parents, find out their other plights. The parents have to make sure in return that their children attend school regularly. The feedback from teachers is extremely encouraging. All the kids under the programme are back in school, the violence in the family goes down. The attitude of the pupils change, grades go up. With this programme, we can truly change lives!
